• Exam to hold May 8 to June 23
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has said 1,621,853 million candidates will be sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to hold between May 8 and June 23.
Head of National Office, Patrick Areghan, at a pre-examination news conference yesterday, said the candidates cut across the 20,851 government and private schools registered for the exam. He added that the number increased by 13,868, compared to the 1,607,985 who registered in 2022.
Areghan noted that though the National Identification Number (NIN) was a requirement for registration, no candidate was disqualified for not having it.
He added: “Registration started on October 10, 2022, with a set deadline of January 27, 2023, which was eventually extended to March 31, 2023. It could not even end due to the shenanigans of some private schools, and entries eventually closed on April 15.”
Areghan maintained the zero tolerance stance of the council towards all forms of malpractice, adding that penalties will always be meted to erring candidates, invigilators, supervisors, schools, WAEC officials, etc, as would be approved by the Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC), the highest decision-making organ of the council on examination matters.
He also said the council’s Candidate Self-Service/Chatbot would allow students to confirm data uploaded for them by schools to make necessary corrections.
