19 passengers burnt to death in Enugu crash

No fewer than 19 passengers and the driver have died in a road accident in Enugu State on Saturday. .

The incident, which happened at Ituku Town in Awgu local government area along Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, involved a Mercedes Benz Tipper with registration number: AAA 285 XR and an 18-Seater Commuter to Enugu South Mass Transit bus with registration number: NKE 622 XA.

The 18-seater bus, which was a fully loaded, had a head-on collision with a tipper loaded with bags of cement around 8.30pm.

While the driver of the tipper was rushed to the hospital, the bus driver and his 18 passengers did not survive it.

The victims were burnt beyond recognition after running into the tipper, which was driving against the traffic with the bus exploding immediately.

Confirming the incident, Enugu Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Ammani, cautioned motorists against disobeying road traffic rules. 

In a statement by the spokesman of the sPolice command, Daniel Ndukwe, the CP said: “Preliminary investigation reveals that the Tipper loaded with bags of cement and plying against traffic from Enugu City, had a head-on collision with the Bus loaded with passengers and coming from Aba, Abia State, which resulted in the both vehicles bursting up in flames and all the occupants burning beyond recognition, except the driver of the Tipper, who was found alive and is currently admitted in the hospital”.
