20 ‘hoodlums’ arrested in Oyo

Police

Twenty persons were yesterday arrested by the police in Oyo town for disturbing the peace.

It was gathered that some hoodlums, on Sunday, harassed and extorted money from residents in Ilaka, Oke Apo, Akesan and Adesin.

Eyewitnesses said the hoodlums armed with sticks, cutlasses and broken bottles continued their assault yesterday.

They said the sharing of the money resulted in clashes among factional groups. The popular Akesan market was hurriedly locked as the hoodlums engaged themselves in a free-for-all.

Streets were littered with broken bottles. Seven vehicles were reportedly destroyed and an unspecified number of people injured.

Policemen from the four divisional commands, led by the area commander, Oyeleye Oyediran, restored normalcy in the area.
