The Kano State Hisbah Board yesterday said 226 beggars were arrested in November for allegedly violating the law banning begging on major streets.
An Anti-begging Unit official, Musa Sangaya, told reporters of the 226 arrested, 119 were children; 107 were adults.
According to him, the suspects were arrested around Bata, Naibawa, Nassarawa hospital and Yankaba areas.
Sangaya added that 98 of the arrested beggars hail from Kano city, eight from Bichi, Rano and Gezawa councils, and 120 from Cameroon and Niger Republic, among others.
Six of them were taken to court while others; first offenders, were taken to their councils.
