50,000-litre capacity borehole for Borno IDPs

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, yesterday inaugurated a 50,000-litre capacity solar borehole provided by the Army in Dikwa, Borno State, as part of the 2016 Army Day Celebrations.

Buratai, accompanied by Governor Kashim Shettima and top militay brass, performed the ceremony in Dikwa, headquarters of Dikwa Local Government.

He said the Army provided the borehole as part of its Civil-Military Relations Program.

Buratai said the aim was to assist in the provision of water to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the town.

“The Nigerian Army decided to provide the 50,000-litre capacity borehole as part of its policy of enhancing the civil-military relations in the society.

“The main target is to help the numerous IDPs returning home,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the COAS also launched the free feeding programme and commenced a military medical outreach for the 70,000 IDPs in the town.

He visited the famous historical Rabe’s Fort in Dikwa; where he appealed to governments to help in preserving the site due to its cultural and historical value.

Dikwa was one of the towns liberated by the Army after it was taken over by suspected Boko Haram terrorists for several months.
