Rep-elect: let’s have female Speaker

The responsibility of electing the leadership of the National Assembly rest on members, Hajia Khadija Abba Bukar-Ibrahim has said.

Bukar-Ibrahim, however noted that President Muhammadu Buhari’s input in the leadership would prevent the 2015 mistake.

Besides, she also advocated a female Speaker, saying it won’t be out of place to have a female-led National Assembly.

The former minister of state of Foreign Affairs said women had not been fairly represented in any aspect of governance.

“As I mentioned earlier, it’s up to members of the House to choose the leaders first, and secondly, the gender needs to come in, because as a woman, I feel that we are not fairly or squarely represented in any aspect of governance because in the elective position, we only have barely 10 or 11 or 12 members that are female of 360 members and when it comes to voting, youths and women are the highest voters in this country.”

She stressed that “ a woman’s position is now associated with development; giving a woman a major position in any country as you can see Nancy Pelosi in the United States; the Prime Minister of Britain, Theresa May. You can see Angela Merkel in Germany, and these are the most three most powerful nations in the world but they’re headed by women, most of them…’’
