The Nigeria Association of Social Workers (NASoW) has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to assent to the ”National Council for Social Work Bill 2017″ to stem the activities of quacks in the profession.
NASoW Chairperson in Lagos State Mrs. Adetoun Ogedengbe made this appeal in s statement to mark the International Social Work day, with the theme “Promoting Importance of Human Relationships”.
Every March 19 has been set by the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) as the International Social Work Day.
Ogedengbe maintained that Buhari’s assent to the bill, which has been passed by the National Assembly, will put Nigeria on the map of countries which cares for the welfare of its citizens.
She said: “I am delighted to be here to celebrate this year’s International Social Work Day. I welcome you all to this important event where we will interact, share useful ideas and benefit professionally through the various discussions.
“The theme of the celebration is apt, given the important role of human relationships in achieving set objectives, and the need for professionalism in every facet of our lives to meet acceptable international standards in our various activities.
“Social work, as a profession which helps individuals and the vulnerable, must continue to reflect the yearnings of the people and accommodate various challenges confronting the nation. There is the need to give a pride of place to the promotion of human relationships. In doing this, effective communication skills are important for social work professionals.
“The very basis of social work is informal interaction, which helps social workers to relate better with their clients. The clients need to feel comfortable and trust the social work provider. By this, we are building infinite human relationships for the greatness of our communities and the society at large…”
