Olu of Ishaga, His Royal Highness, Oba Ajibode, has called on the state government to establish youth development centres in all the local government areas of the state where the youths could be engaged in sporting activities.
Oba Ajibode, who was the chairman at the inter-house sports competition organized by Fitjoy schools yesterday, said that games and sports were the catalysts needed by the government to change the perception of the youths from social problems such as armed robbery, kidnapping and 419.
He spoke further: “I see the youths in hundreds at the news-stands beside my palace everyday from morning till evening, fighting over Ronaldo and Messi. I am pained. An idle mind is the workshop of the devil. I want the governments at the state and local levels to urgently accommodate and engage these people”.
Oba Ajibode urged the government to compel all schools in the state, public and private, to engage in sporting activities, stressing that Lagos was no more doing well at the national sporting events as a result of the neglect of sports at the grassroots.
The Royal Highness praised the proprietress of Fitjoy schools and her management team for always organizing Inter-house sports competition every two years, adding that the event should be made a yearly event.
The proprietress of the school, Dr Oyeyinka, who spoke with journalists at the event, urged the state government to speed up work on the Ifako mini stadium, venue of the inter-house sports, to enable the youths in the area develop their talents for the betterment of the state.
