Banker gets N500,000 bail for alleged N4.4m theft

A 34-year-old banker, Emmanuel Odoemena, who is on trial for  allegedly stealing  N4.46 million, was yesterday at an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court granted N500, 000 bail.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Prosecuting Inspector Lucky Ihiehie said the defendant committed the offence between January 2018 and February 2019 at the Ketu branch, Lagos branch of a third generation bank.

He alleged that the defendant, an account officer, stole N4, 467, 152.27 from customers.

“The defendant stole the amount using fraudulent alters and falsified statements of account of the total cash collected from the customers.

“The defendant used his position as a transaction officer and unlawfully converted the money to his property, hence the report.

“He was later arrested by the police for investigation,” Ihiehie added.

Magistrate E. Kubeinje granted the defendant N500, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum. She said the sureties must not be self-employed and adjourned till June 19.
