The Hisbah Committee in Kebbi State has rescued a 2-day-old baby girl that was buried alive by its mother. The baby was reportedly found alive two days after she was born at the back of a hotel in Birnin Kebbi.

The mother of the baby and her friend were said to have lodged in a popular hotel, Zinari, for two days and sneaked out and buried the baby at night at the back of the hotel.

The Director of Sharia and Religious Affairs Department in the state, Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad Lamne Augie, said it was the cry of the baby that attracted passersby and the baby was removed from the shallow grave.

According to him, the baby girl was buried alive by her mother who lodged in that hotel  (name withheld)with her friend.

“He said, “After they had buried the baby, two days later, they went to the scene to verify if the baby had died.”

“But to their surprise, when they open the grave, the baby cried out, so they ran away.”

“But when the baby continued crying, passerby raced to the scene where they discovered the baby buried in the ground. They removed her from the ground, alerted us, and we came to the scene to rescue the baby.”

“On further inquiry, residents of the area told us that they saw two girls around the scene and they said they came from the hotel. So, we went to the hotel where we apprehended the two suspects.”

“The director along with the state vice-chairman, Alhaji Mamuda Geza, and state secretary, Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmad, attributed the incident to unwanted pregnancy, stressing that parents and religious leaders need to do a lot against societal vices.”

Meanwhile, the baby has been returned to the mother with strict conditions attached by the court adding that orphanage home would not accept a baby whose mother is alive.
