Activist tasks FG task to stop fossil fuels

The Coordinator of 350. Org, Lagos, Idowu Esuku has appealed to the federal government to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and coal mining as they are not sustainable for our environment.

Esuku said this at a road showbiz concert organized by Blaze Media Concept in commemoration of the Africa Action Day 350 Nigeria on Fossil Fuel Free Nigeria held across Somolu and its environ in Lagos.

The concert had youths from parts of Lagos with banners with various inscriptions such as; say No to Fossil fuel, 100% Renewable Energy, Let’s Build a Fossil Free Nigeria. It featured Dj Blaze, MC Heineken, May Lender, Pheels, MC Gboy, and Dj Jerric Joe.

He said that we are deeply concern about the continued investment in fossil fuels by government, stating that fossil fuel cannot develop the country in a sustainable way.

“many countries are moving from fossil energy to hydro, wind and solar as their source of energy because they are environment friendly and sustainable for the environment.”

“climate change is a global phenomenon that affect all the countries of the world. It is a threat to human, animals, and plant existence.”

“the increasing cases of strange and life threatening diseases to the use of fossil fuel as people especially in local areas in the Niger Delta bears the burden associated with fossil fuels exploration with no respite coming soon.”

“fossil fuels are natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological post from the remains of living organisms and its environmental effects especially in the oil rich region of Nigeria include impaired hearing, ill health, impairing visibility, deafness, sleeplessness, choking sensation and dizziness.”

He also said, Nigeria is spending huge sums of money to cushion the challenges facing the energy sector but that has only made little difference in the amount of energy supply in many areas in Nigeria.

“instead of financing projects that would produce profoundly negative environmental impact. Government should consider projects that tap into Nigeria’s numerous renewable and low-cost resources.”

He stated further that the federal government has a moral obligation to leave behind a well-off earth for our children. The land, oceans forest reserve   and arctic are all common wealth owners by mankind.

“We demand our local leaders to commit to building a fossil free world and put the people and justice first before profits. We want to end the era of fossil fuel and save the climate we depend on”.
