Nigerians charged not to celebrate drug addicts

Nigerians have been charged not to celebrate criminals and drug addicts but rather celebrate progress-oriented values in a challenging society.

Speaking at a roll call award ceremony organised in honour of 34 students of Unique Heights Schools, Isheri-Magodo, Lagos, an educationist, Mrs. Olayinka Oluwadare, who was the guest speaker, spoke on the theme: “Making Excellence a Habit in a Challenging Society”. She stressed the importance of inculcating the spirit of excellence in children during their formative years especially in a challenging society such as Nigeria.

According to Oluwadare, excellence is the quality of being outstanding or extremely good while defining challenging society as one that does not celebrate correct, progress-oriented values.

She added that from the scriptures, one can deduce that to make excellence a habit, there is the need to study the excellent God who is the originator. Oluwadare described Nigeria as a challenging society, saying this is a nation where people are ruled by mediocrities and failures.

“It is a nation where morally-depraved persons are elected as leaders and celebrated. In this nation, excellence is resisted and intelligent persons are assassinated or abducted. It is a nation where parents have devalued education and do register their children in the so-called special centres to write external examinations. What a greatly depraved society!” she lamented.

The administrator regretted further that these are the odds against which students have to fight to make excellence a habit, but added that one should not say because mediocrity is celebrated, then shun excellence.
