Commonwealth Games bronze medalist, Bose Samuel of Ondo State reclaimed her national title by beating Ozeoma Joseph of Delta State in the final of the 53kg Women’s Wrestling at the ongoing 3rd Governor Dickson National Wrestling Classics at the Indoor Hall of the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenegoa, Bayelsa State.
Samuel, who was dethroned by Rosemary Nweke at the National Sports Festival last December in Abuja, showed no mercy as she defeated Joseph by 10-0 for her third national title. Kehinde Nureni of Lagos State, however, won the bronze medal in that category.
In a chat with NationSport after the fight, the African champion said her aim now is to win gold at Africa Games on her debut in Morocco.
“I really thank God for making me to achieve this success. This is my third national title and it did not come on a platter of gold. Even though I won by 10-0, it was not a easy match I must confess. As you can see that my opponent gave a good account of herself throughout the match.
“We have the All Africa Games and the World Championship ahead of us but I have to take it as it comes. So my next target is to win All Africa Games in Morocco,” Samuel told NationSport.
In the two Freestyle finals decided on Thursday, Victor Firstman of Delta State overcame Stephen Akintene from Purity Club 6-4 in the 61kg class in a keenly contested finale. Kolawole Fisayo of Ondo State won the bronze medal.
Daufa Robert of Bayelsa State beat Omega Bassey of Oyo State to clinch gold in the 92kg category. The bronze medal of the category went to George Kurai of Edo State.
Meanwhile, in the Greco Roman events, Nnalue Dominic of Team Delta impressively took out Akiniwesi Boluwaji of Ondo State 11-0 via technical superiority in the 55kg weight class. Sunday Amuji of Edo won the bronze medal.
And in the final of the 87kg category, Tobechukwu Udeh of Nigeria Army dismantled Emmanuel Duk of Cross River State 17-7 to claim his second national title. Mathias Okuma of Edo won the bronze medal.
Following their victories, Bose, Daufa, Firstman, Udeh and Nnalue have all qualified to represent Nigeria at the 12th All-African Games in Rabat, Morocco in August.
