The Chief Judge (CJ) of the Federal High Court, Justice Adamu Abdu Kafarati has won this year’s International Human Rights and Anti-corruption Society (IHRAS) award.
IHRAS, a United Nations affiliate group, said it chose Justice Kafarati for the honour in view of his commitment to human rights protection, anti-corruption advocacy and promotion of judicial independence through various activities of the court.
It stated this in a letter dated April 25, which was received in the judge’s chambers on June 25.
The letter was signed by IHRAS’ Director-General/International Observer, Dr. U. O. Udofia and the group’s Secretary, M. T. Kachina.
It stated that the presentation of the award would take place on July 4 at 2 pm in the court’s ceremonial hall.
The letter reads in part: “Notice of conferment of the International Award for Public Interest, Excellent and Meritorious Services to the Nation (Nigeria).

“The IHRAS has observed, over the years your commitment and support for human rights protection, campaign for public accountability and promotion of the independence of the Judiciary, as an individual and through the decisions of the Federal High Court.
“On behalf of the board of directors of IHRAS, National Executive, International Council, Chancellors; the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN-ECOSOC) President, Her Excellency Inga Rhonda King and the Special Rapporteur of the Human Rights Council on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers of the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights in Geneva, please, accept our warm congratulations and commendations.
The list of invited guests includes the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Chief Registrar, ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, President, Court of Appeal, members of the diplomatic corps, among others.
