Former Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa has said that the 9th National Assembly will work to review the security architecture in the country as part of efforts to address the security challenges in the country.
Doguwa who was endorsed as the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives by the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday told newsmen that if necessary, the National Assembly will consider the establishment of state and community police to assist in bringing to an end the insecurity in the country.
He said “the House of Representatives and by extension the National Assembly will certainly concentrate on reviewing some of our security apparatus and some of our existing security legislation.
“We wouldn’t mind considering the issues of State and community policing because there is a serious challenge in that sector and with the promise of the administration of this Speaker House of Representatives and even by extension, the commitment of an experienced Senate President in the person of Senator Ahmed Lawan, we will look at this aspect of our existence to see how to address the challenges we have in security.
“Community and state policing is one very critical sector in our economy that we have to look at and address, so that we can provide absolute security for our people.”

He assured that the 9th Assembly will engage in a robust engagement with the executive without undermining their independence saying “I want to assure you and Nigerians that there is little or nothing that we will not do differently in the ninth of House of Representatives. It will be different all through.
“We will engage very robustly without necessarily undermining the independence of the legislature which of course is paramount. We will be very friendly and sustain that institutional understanding between the legislature and the executive arm of government.
“We had a very embarrassing situation and circumstances last time. But I believe that with what we have in Ninth House of Representatives, we will operate on a different level that is unprecedentedly in terms of our engagement with the government especially in trying to support the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari to deliver on the promises of his campaigns and the policies and programmes of the APC.
“I believe the head of House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila will engage with all the Principal Officers and work in synergy with the opposition parties on the floor of the House of Representatives to deliver on or mandate to the expectations of Nigerians.
“I want to tell Nigerians that they should expect good health, they should expect quality education, they should also expect a robust engagement in terms of providing reviewed security strategy in order to exhibit and establish the fundamental role of government which is protection of lives and security of properties of our own people.”
