Bridge International Academies, Lagos has praised the selection of Mrs MaryJane Ikeakaonwu as one of the teachers that made the maiden edition of ‘Teachers’ Reality TV Show’ showing on Silverbird television.
Its Director of Academics, Rhoda Odigboh praised Mrs Ikeakaonwu, who teaches at Daddy Savage Academy, one of Bridge’s schools located in Fagba, Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos.
“That she is in the house makes me really excited. We feel very connected to our teachers. One of the defining features of our work here is teacher support. We are constantly thinking about how to give the right feedback, encourage them to do better and just celebrate what they do. I am not surprised that MaryJane made it to the house because she is one of our very good teachers”, she said at a press conference held at the Bridge Academies office in Yaba.
The director added that the show would avail people the opportunity to know how the academy impacts its pupils.
“This is what our goal is; we want people to know we give 100 per cent support to our teachers because we know that when teachers do very well, it literally translates to learning outcomes for the children.”
The reality show, the first of its kind in Nigeria tends to showcase the life, strength, skills and important work a teacher does in nation building hence creating a paradigm shift in the way teachers are perceived in the country.
The show, which started last Saturday and has the endorsement of the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja, is slated to run for 15 days.
MaryJane said she came across the show on the internet, where she had to write an essay on ‘what to do differently to change Nigeria’s education system’ before she was shortlisted for the next stage.
For the next step which involved voting, she had over 2,000 votes to be selected among the 15 out of 179 shortlisted teachers.
MaryJane believes that the teaching method she adopted at Bridge Academies gave her an edge.
“What gave me the edge is what I do in my class every day. I give the best to my pupils and motivate them to learn. When I came to bridge, they taught me how to teach the pupils; how to set questions, how the pupils will seat all which has made the affection between me and my children lovely,” she said.
