Youths of Modakeke town in Ife North East Local Council Development Area on Wednesday staged a protest against the presentation of staff of office to the new Ogusua of Modakeke, Oba Oladejo Oyeniran.
The youths, who protested round the town to register their grievances, insisted that they did not want an aged person as their king.
At Ita-Merin, adjacent the Ogunsua’s Palace, Modakeke-Ife, the leader of the youths, Evangelist Tunde Olasiyan, said they rejected Oba Oladejo Oyediran, who is above 80 years old, on age ground.
According to the protesters, the new Ogunsua cannot perform his roles effectively because of his old age.
Stressing that they preferred the new Ogunsua’s son, they promised to continue the protest until the kingmakers and the state government recorgnised their preferred candidate for the position.
The youths cited neighbouring towns like Ile-Ife, Iwo and Ipetumodu having youths as their kings.
“We youths have spoken with the chosen aged monarch and he has accepted that his son, Prince Bosun Oyediran, should be chosen as the new monarch, for peaceful coexistence in the town,” Olasiyan said.
