THE people of Bakare Odedina Village in the Olokonla area of the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State have appealed to the Lagos State government to help them protect their land.

According to the residents of the village, their land is under threat from illegal acquisition.

The spokesperson of the residents, Mr. Adekunle Ajayi, during a peaceful protest staged against the illegal acquisition of their land, said: “From information available to us, there is likely to be an attempt to illegally acquire our land bought legally from the Bakare Odedina family.

“The family is not troubling us. All members of this family are peaceful and progressive people, always giving us their cooperation.

“If we don’t have problems with the family that sold the land to us, why should we have problems with any person or organization? We are law-abiding residents of the village.

“We have not done anything against the state or federal government. Therefore, we are calling on the state governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to help us protect our land from illegal acquisition.

“We don’t want to take the information available to us lightly because there was a time we heard of the possible invasion of our village and it happened. Many buildings were then destroyed.”

The spokesperson of the Bakare Odedina family, Yinka Odedina, said: “Our family is a patriotic one. We support the Lagos State and federal governments in their efforts to transform the state and the country respectively. There was a time we gave five acres of land to the Lagos State    government on request. This was an act of patriotism.

“This is our land. It belongs to us. It is ours from time immemorial. We legally sold it to these people (pointing to the protesters). They are people who cherish peace. They are not troublemakers. They are living in constant fear of losing their land through illegal acquisition. This is why they are protesting. What they want is justice”.

Odedina appealed to Governor Sanwo-Olu and his government to protect Bakare Odedina Village’s land in the interest of peace and justice.

“We implore Governor Sanwo-Olu not to abandon us. We want him and his government to protect our land for us. We support him. We love and respect him. We appeal to him to come to our aid at this troubled time,” he said.
