Fast-moving cooking oil manufacturer, PZ Wilmar has initiated moves to promote entrepreneurship through the consumption of healthy street foods.

To actualise this, the firm has assembled 13 Street Food Entrepreneurs and placed a  grand prize of N1million for the winner of the competition it tagged: King of street foods reality show sponsored by Devon King’s, one of its brand cooking oils.

The firm announced the take off of the contest at its Ilupeju, Lagos headquarters at the weekend during a media parley.

PZ Cussons’ Human Resources Director, Joyce Coker, expressed delight at the prospect of the contest’s maiden edition.

She said the competition presents an opportunity for Devon King’s to create a stronger connection with its consumers. She also thanked the partners, Food Bay TV, for coming up with  the unique contest.

“With Devon King’s extension into cooking margarine, industrial margarine and seasoning categories, we are now uniquely positioned not only for home cooking but also for delicious Nigerian street foods. Our efforts will be rewarded if street foods culture becomes as popular in Nigeria as it is in many parts of the world,” she said.

Devon King’s Brand Manager,  Bamise Oyegbami, who spoke about the contest, said the brand is focused on delivering the true Nigerian taste in delicious local delicacies to consumers at every meal occasion.

“Besides the monetary rewards, we will also be equipping the contestants with relevant skills that will help them run their businesses efficiently, and they will also be mentored by seasoned chefs within the Nigerian food industry who will teach them to be better versions of themselves. In addition, we will also be giving their places of business a face lift as true partners.

“As you may be aware, Devon King’s has remained as the leading brand in this category for many years now and as a brand, we are well-known for providing consumers with quality, yet affordable and easily accessible options. This affordability and availability ties in with street foods which are relatively affordable, tasty meal options against home cooked meals and can be found at every nook and cranny.

The street food culture in Nigeria is all about “Taste”, innovative interpretation & presentation. Devon King’s stands as the champion of the true Nigerian taste in not just our home meals but also in street foods – be it on taste or creativity. As a result of these, we see a perfect match for street food business owners as they are able to make their meals with tasty and equally affordable products from Devon King’s,” Oyegbami said.

The 13 contestants across Lagos, Calabar, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Abuja and Kano were eventually selected for the competition based on set criteria. The winner of the contest will walk away with N1 million and additional prizes from Devon King’s, while the runners-up will be rewarded with consolation prizes.
