‘We need counselling clinics’

PROFESSOR of Guidance and Counseling, Professor Mopelola Omoegun has called on the Lagos state government to make provision for Counselling Clinics in the state which would help assist in curbing the menace of miscreants and reduce the rate of depression which leads to suicide in the state.

She made this known on Monday during the ‘First Lagos Association of Professional Counsellors in Nigeria (APROCON)’ conference, which was held at the University of Lagos, she noted that no official clinic was in the state aside  from private ones, adding that its association would voluntarily assign members.

“If Lagos state can start up a counselling clinic, we will send our counsellors there on voluntary basis, even I can go there I used to do that, you know people need help, when they know there is service provided for them free of charge, they will come and by doing that, you will be able to reach out and help people to prevent them from even thinking of committing suicide. Officially there is no counselling clinic in Lagos state, there are just private ones,” she said.

Prof Omoegun who doubled as the Chairman of the occasion with theme: Counselling for Security and Psycho-Social Wellness, said though a few private counselling clinics are in the country but are privately owned by its members which is the primary essence of the association, saying as members have the right to own them from the certificate they acquire to start up.
