Police in Zamfara State have confirmed that 14 persons were killed and 10 others injured on Sunday when suspected bandits attacked Karaye village in Gummi Local Government Area of the state.

Public Relations Officer Muhammad Shehu said in a statement that the attack could have been a reprisal.

Shehu said the assailants also set some houses ablaze.

He said a vigilante group popularly known as Yansakai on November 3 killed nine Fulani suspected to be bandits in Bardoki village in the council area.

The case, Shehu said, is under investigation by the state CID, adding that the suspects will be charged to court for prosecution in order to serve as deterrent to others.

Meanwhile, a combined team of security operatives has been mobilised to the scene of the attack, The Nation learnt.

The team was also said to be combing the bushes to apprehend the assailants and possibly others criminals.

“Bodies and injured victims were conveyed to the hospital in Gummi for autopsy and treatment. Discreet investigation into the incident is ongoing and whoever is involved will be made to face the full wrath of the law,” Shehu said

He stressed that the Command warned members of the public to desist from taking the law into  their hands, as the force will not hesitate to deal decisively with any person or group of persons that tries to sabotage the peace currently being enjoyed in the state.

A resident of the area, who preferred anonymity, in a telephone call with The Nation disputed the casualty  figures given by the police.

He said that even though he could not provide the actual figures, the bodies he saw could be over 40.

The Nation gathered that villagers around the affected areas are buying locally made weapons with a view to defending themselves when attacked.
