A popular politician in Ibadan, Oyo state capital, Yemi Adeniran,on Thursday died in a ghastly motor accident while returning from Abuja after witnessing the judgement of the Supreme court affirming the victory of Governor Seyi Makinde in the March 9 governorship election in the state.
Three others involved in the accident however sustained serious injuries.
This was just as major areas across Ibadan, the state capital, went agog in celebration of the victory of Governor Seyi Makinde at the Supreme Court.
According to a source, Adeniran, who was a former leader of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), left Abuja on a commercial vehicle and was already in Adegbayi, a suburb of Ibadan, when the accident occurred.
Also in the ill-fated vehicle was the youth leader of the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) in Oyo State, Asiwaju Adekola Adeoye and three others, who are currently under intensive care at an undisclosed hospital.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mrs. Uche Chukura, who confirmed the incident, told newsmen that there was no causality as at the time of rescuing the victims, adding that the command would get back later.
But the governor, who returned to the state yesterday morning from Abuja where the final verdict on the authentic winner of the March 29, 2019 governorship election was delivered, was received at the Alakia, Ibadan Airport by top government functionaries, including Deputy Governor Rauf Olaniyan; Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Olubanwo Adeosun; Chairman, State Advisory Council, Senator Hosea Agboola and the Head of Service, Mrs Amidat Agboola.

Also in attendance were commissioners and special advisers, among other political appointees, as well as thousands of party supporters and loyalists, who had stormed the airport in various branded and customised outfits, also joined in the celebration.
In what seems like an appreciation tour of the city, the governor’s convoy, which had about a hundred vehicles, including thousands of supporters in commercial motorcycles and buses, drove round the city cheering and jubilating.
From the Alakia-Wema Airport, the convoy toured Iwo-Road, Idi Ape, Gate, Oje, Bere, Mapo, Idi Arere, Molete, Oke Ado to Dugbe, Mokola, Sango to UI, leaving in its trail heavy traffic congestion and stranded commuters.
As the convoy moved, thousands of residents and business owner,s who ran to the roadsides to join in the frenzy of the celebrations, were also seen splashing sachet water on the vehicles, chanting ‘omituntun’, political slogan of the government.
The tour finally terminated at the State Secretariat, where thousands of jubilant supporters gathered to celebrate the victory.
Addressing supporters, including workers, retirees, socio cultural groups, among others, who thronged the secretariat, the governor assured the people of the state of his commitment to ensuring that dividends of democracy reached them.
He promised the workers that his government would pay the 13th month salary on the 26th of December, having paid the December salary last week.
