Group provides medical assistance, empowerment, donation to abandoned Lagos community

A group of teenagers under the Teen Team initiative embarked on a three-day programme to provide medical assistance, empowerment and donation of food items/educational materials to the people of Isefun community in Lagos State.

Teen Team which is a non-governmental organization is made up of teenagers who aim to build the capacity of young-folks for exploits making through transformation, empowerment and enlargement programmes by creating the right network or association for purposeful life enhancement.

The teenage group established by Samuel Ajala, a student of the Federal University Oye Ekiti, recently organized a community development project titled Giving back to the society (GBS).

The programme which took place between 26th and 28th of December at the Isefun Community in Lagos empowered the young people in this area.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs Balikis Jimoh said her heart was filled with joy and gladness towards the organizers of the programme. To her, she said “the programme was good enough because it seeks after the well-being of the people.”

She appreciated the entire group for the provision of daily amenities to the people.

She said, “What you people have done is good, it shows you remembered some people are still living here”.

While talking about what she benefited from the programme, she said the aspect of providing medical assistance made her happy because “health is wealth”.

“In all the different sections, I was privileged to be part of all, but that of medical checkup is what I enjoyed most, it shows some people somewhere still care for us”, she added.

One of the volunteers who also double as the Assistant Director of Medical, Omope Kemi said there were lots of challenges being faced by the people of the communities.

“This could be because they are not being enlightened on how to live a healthy life or due to government negligence”. She explained.

She said people had low insight about their health status and are even scared of what the outcome would be since it is new to them.

“During the checking of hepatitis B people were scared and even praying that it should not be positive but despite all, we give glory to God because none was positive”.

Speaking on what prompted the establishment of the organization, the Founder of Teen Team, Samuel Ajala, emphasized on the need to build the community at large by helping others.

According to him, enlightening the young folks of today brings about a better future tomorrow and there are needs to make way for the intuitive knowledge the young possesses in other to aid a better society.

“As you can see, we have used the network of teenagers to empower the people of Isefun community who have become abandoned due to their location as an outskirt of Lagos State”.

He said the platform was able to provide the people with some necessary needs that factor a liveable society and also provide guide on how to judiciously make use of any opportunity that comes their way.

“We have empowered over 500 people in the community for three days by providing medical checkup, skills acquisition, donation of food items and educational materials and having a one on one session with the children and teenagers to inspire them of the things around them.”

Furthermore, he appealed on behalf of the residents of some rural areas in Lagos state to the electricity company to provide them with power supply as this has hindered the progress of these communities, and that the ministry in charge of medical/health sector in Lagos should always consider those off urban areas too.
