Enugu airport to be ready before Easter, says minister

The Akanu Ibiam International Airport runway rehabilitation will be completed before Easter, Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika said on Thursday.

The minister, who spoke when he inspected the airport, expressed satisfaction with the progress of work.

He noted that the airport was of strategic importance to the Southeast.

Sirika said the contractor, Messrs PW Ltd, gave an assurance that the project would be completed before Easter.

According to him, the airport’s new international terminal will be completed before the end of the year.

He said Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), Air Field Lighting (AFL), Taxi lights and other key deliverables were parts of the project.

Enugu State Deputy Governor Mrs Cecilia Ezeilo; Chairman, House Committee on Aviation Nnoli Nnaji, and the Managing Director of Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Captain Rabiu Yadudu, accompanied the minister on the inspection.

Enugu Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Greg Nnaji, an engineer, Nigeria’s representative at the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Ben Tukur, and a delegation from the Southeast Governors Forum’ Enugu Airport/Palliative Works Committee, were also present.

Ezeilo stressed the airport’s importance to the Southeast and beyond, adding that the state was committed to the project’s timely completion.

Nnaji said the National Assembly had fulfilled its part in the project execution.

He said oversight functions to ensure that the airport renovation was completed to standard would continue.
