Friends of the former Chairman of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL) Olumide Akpata have pledged to sponsor 30 young lawyers to the 2020 edition of the Practice preparation Course (PPC) organised by Legally Engaged in Lagos.

Akpata, who has a long-standing support for and sponsorship of capacity building and professional development programmes for young lawyers, said he was “highly  delighted” with the offer.

The business lawyer told The Nation how the pledge came about.

Akpata said: “My friends came together and asked me how they can be part of my continued desire to improve the welfare and capacity of young lawyers in the country.

“In line with my philosophy of life and practice, I requested them to assist by increasing the knowledge base and training of our  young lawyers to fit into a globalised law practice.

“They now decided to sponsor them for this training which will take the young lawyers through basic commercial law modules and equip them to practise in any area of commercial law”.

The 2020 Practice Preparation Course (PPC) is  an intensive two-week training organised in Lagos by Legally Engaged from  January 13 to 22.

The PPC will feature over 20 sessions on various areas of commercial law such as Taxation, IP, Capital Markets, Mergers & Acquisitions, Banking, Energy, etc.

In addition, there will be special introductory focus sessions for lawyers whose practice may not have involved some of these specialised areas of law.

The focus sessions will deal with issues such as introduction to emerging areas of law practice; law practice as a business; preparing for the future of law and expanding the scope of one’s legal practice.

The sponsorship is all-expenses paid and will cover  the course fees,  travel costs to  and fro Lagos, accommodation within Lagos for the duration of the course,  feeding, course materials and other associated costs and logistics.

All the sessions will be facilitated by highly-regarded legal professionals who are at the peak of their careers.

A key goal of this sponsorship is to contribute towards improving the professional competence and specialised know-how of Nigerian lawyers, and is consistent with the long-term objectives of Friends of Olu Akpata.

Accordingly, any person qualified to practice law in Nigeria with two  to seven  years post qualification experience, may apply.
