Two fires wreaked havoc on Sunday in Onitsha, the commercial nerve of Anambra State.

Seven persons were feared burnt in one of the fires which resulted from a domestic gas explosion in the Inland Town area of the city.

The second blaze, which was said to have been caused by a bushfire, gutted the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that the domestic fire which occurred around 10.30am, reportedly started from a recently procured gas cooker whose owner was using for the first time.

Confirming both incidents, police spokesman Haruna Mohammed said no life was lost, though he said there were injuries and that the hospitalised victims were responding to treatment.

He said, “At about 12:30pm [yesterday], there was another fire incident at INEC office in Ogidi.

“Police patrol team led by DPO, Ogidi Division, rushed to the scene and Fire Service department was contacted.

“The scene was cordoned off and effort is ongoing to put off the fire and prevent it from escalating. The fire allegedly emanated from bush burning. However, the extent of damage done is yet to be determined.”

Mohammed added that the victims of the Onitsha incident sustained varying degrees of injuries.
