Fake NGOs defraud job seekers in Niger

Two executives of a fake non-governmental organisation (NGO) have been arrested for defrauding some unemployed youths in Niger State under the pretext of providing jobs for them.

The NGO, Better Life Africa, had collected over N1.5 million from unsuspecting youths desperate to get jobs in Kuta and Gunu area of the  state.

The suspects were arrested by detectives of Bangi Division attached to the State Intelligence Bureau of the Niger State Police Command.

The suspected fraudsters, Abdulwahab Ibrahim, 33, and Solomon Gana, 45, came to their tether’s end when some of their aggrieved victims reported them to the police after waiting in vain for the promised employment.

The fake NGO, which claimed to have its headquarters in Abuja,  usually distributed forms of registration to unemployed youths at the rate of N1000 with the promise of getting them a job and empowering them.

The Nation gathered that the fraudsters had  collected the sum of N1,281, 000 from Kuta people and N200,000 from the people in Gunu area before they were arrested.

It was learned that the suspects  defrauded unemployed youths of Bangi, Katcha, Mariga Dandaudu, Kagara and Kuta under the pretense of empowering them.

When paraded, one of the suspects, Gana said they resorted to the fake NGO profile to make money in order to survive the current economic hardship.

According to him, they were not at fault as they were as greedy as their victims who were ready to do anything to get a job.

“You do not need to have an office before you make thousands of naira in Nigeria. We didn’t do anything wrong; we only used our skills to reach out to people and convince them to buy into our idea, and we were able to make our cool money.”

Police spokesman Muhammad Abubakar, said five other members of the fake NGO were still at large, adding that the police were on their trail.
