The Edo and Ondo states’ governorship elections scheduled to hold on September 19 and October 10 may be stalled by litigations, The Nation has learnt.
National chairmen of the recently deregistered political parties are reportedly planning to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from conducting the elections until it reverses deregistration of their parties.
The aggrieved party chairmen expressed the determination to seek courts’ interpretation of the deregistration, if it was constitutional.
Until this is done, they said no one could stop them from participating in the governorship elections.
The National Chairman of the National Conscience Party (NCP), Dr Yunusa Tanko, told The Nation that his party and the others affected by the INEC action would challenge the deregistration in court and participate in the polls, notwithstanding the deregistration.

He said: “We are saying that we will be in the ballot in the Edo and Ondo elections, as long as we will challenge the decision in court. So, the court will tell us why we should not participate in the elections.
“We are saying that we were deregistered in error. The best thing is not to exclude us from the elections. Otherwise, anybody who wins the election is at the risk of being removed.”
But INEC insisted that it acted within the powers bestowed on it by the Constitution.
