The Conference of Civil Service Doctors (NAGGDMP) in Anambra State has embarked on indefinite strike over the government’s alleged failure to adhere to the salary agreement signed with them.

The doctors said they were disheartened as they were the least paid in the country.

Chairman Dr Livinus Chukwuma, who addressed reporters at the General Hospital in Onitsha, described the government’s continued renege on its promises as unfortunate.

He said: “This strike is necessitated by the government’s failure to adhere to the agreement signed with Civil Service Doctors and Nigerian Medical Association on one part, and the Government of Anambra State on the other.

“The doctors had earlier embarked on a 13-month strike due to the government’s failure to accept the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) prescribed by the Federal Government as the standard for doctors in the federal civil service.

“The strike was called off following interventions from eminent persons, after which an agreement was reached and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed, stipulating periodic review of the salary until 100 per cent was achieved, starting from 50 per cent.”
