A POLICE inspector serving in Delta State police command, Asaba, Peter Okopi, has been arrested and detained at the Edo police command for killing a tipper-truck driver identified as Richard Odia.

Okopi is attached to the Department of Operations and was reportedly on special duty from Delta State to Edo State, on February 11, 2020 when he shot and seriously wounded Odia at a road construction site, Asagba Boundary Road along Benin-Auchi Expressway during an argument.

Odia was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) but died the following day.

His death sparked a violent protest.

A statement by the Edo State Police spokesman, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor,  said Okopi would be made to face Orderly Room Trial, a mechanism for internal disciplinary action.

The statement said Edo Police Commissioner, Lawan Tanko Jimeta, assured the family that justice would be served.

Nwabuzor said in a statement, “The CP appeals to the family to remain calm and law abiding, as the Command under his leadership puts high premium on human lives.”
