THE Coalition for Transparency and Democratic Leadership (CTDL) on Wednesday urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate $30 million allegedly used to fund the 2019 Bayelsa governorship election.

Members, mostly youths, chanted various songs as they marched on the streets of Abuja.

They said the money was more than what the law allows for election expenses.

CTDL Executive Director, Kingsley Eluma, submitted a petition addressed to the EFCC Acting Chairman Ibrahim Magu.

The coalition questioned how the funds were spent, urging EFCC to investigate the matter.

The petition reads in part: “It is important to state very unambiguously that Nigeria is a nation guided by law and orders, so is our election processes.

“It is important to state here that our laws peg spending of money for election purpose to a particular threshold, upon which whenever any candidate or party violates, it becomes a violation of the law of the land.

“The Procurement Act also suggests processes through which government contracts can be awarded and spells out categories of companies that are not eligible for such contracts.

“It is upon this background that this coalition is appealing to the dutiful, performing and outstanding EFCC under your astute leadership to carefully look into these allegations and investigate the issues raised to bring all concerned to justice in the interest of the nation and to serve as deterrence to other politicians from taking such actions in future.

“We, therefore, passionately plead that this case is given the same attention as you did to Senator Joshua Dariye and former Governor Jolly Nyame.”
