Ogun State Government said on Monday that 1,300 public toilets would be built across the state, to tackle open defecation.

It said that while the cost of 800 of such toilets had been incorporated into this year’s budget, 500 others would be handled through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative.

The Commissioner for Environment, Abiodun Abudu- Balogun, disclosed this while briefing reporters on the measures being taken by his ministry to prevent erosion and flood this year.

Abudun-Balogun said most places where open defecation is rampant are ancient residential settings, adding that it would translate to hurting the people should the government demolish those structures, hence the resolve to adopt public toilet system as solutions.

The commissioner said considering the approaching rainy season, coupled with the proneness of the state to erosion and flood, the Ministry of Environment is taking proactive steps towards early preparations, as intensive de-silting and clearing of drainages across the state and dredging of some rivers and their courses have begun to ensure free flow of water.

He implored the residents to clear their drainages.
