COVID-19 forces skeletal services on churches

IT was an unusual Sunday for Christians in Nigeria on Sunday as many of them were locked out with notices that they stay back at home to pray.

The development followed advisories from the state authorities that large gatherings be avoided to curtail the spread of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the land.

Some churches that opened their gates for services maintained recommended one-metre distance or a gathering not exceeding 50 persons.

At the Throne of Grace (TOG) National Headquarters of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) on 1-9, Redemption Way, Ebute Metta, where Pastor Enoch Adeboye’s sermon was televised, not more than 20 worshippers were in attendance.

The Mission’s National Secretary, Pastor Odesola, said the auditorium has capacity to sit 3,000 worshippers but that members had been told to hook on to Dove Television for the service in their homes and House Fellowship centres.

On March 19, major churches, including the RCCG and the Mountain of Fire (MFM), announced adjustments in their programmes and services.

It was their immediate response to the measures introduced by their hosts Lagos and Ogun state governments.

MFM, through its Assistant General Overseer Pastor Gbesan Adebambo, told members in a memo that no services, including deliverance ministrations will hold in any of the parishes.
