Edo monarch preaches peaceful coexistence

From Elo Edremoda, Warri

The Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom in Delta State, Emmanuel Sideso, Abe I, has called for peaceful coexistence in Ekpan community, Uvwie Local Government Area.

He spoke at the installation of a new Unuevworo (traditional Prime Minister) for the community.

The Unuevworo, Peter Iffie, is also a Senior Special Assistant to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on Community Development. He replaces Chief Newton Agbofodo, who was sentenced to death by a State High Court for allegedly killing John Mogidi in 2018.

Ekpan, until the 2019 elections, was a flag area for youth restiveness, owing to communal and political disputes.

The Ovie, who spoke at his palace in Effurun where the ceremony held, admonished the youths against violence and other vices that may hinder development. He also cautioned the Unuevworo to adhere to the code of conduct guarding chiefs in the kingdom, ruling with truth and justice.

He said: “It is only through peace that Ekpan and other parts of this kingdom will experience development. With sustained peace in the community, more companies would be established in Uvwie, thereby creating more employment for youths.”

Iffie, who emphasised that peace has come to stay in Ekpan, pledged to work with stakeholders, including the government and the Uvwie traditional institution, to resolve all outstanding issues so the community can develop.

He said: “I acknowledge that the protracted crisis in Ekpan community has created fear and division among our youths and this has caused loss of confidence.

“Forgiveness seems to have departed from us, due to the pains of loss. Nonetheless, I bring you good news; to err is human, but to forgive is divine. Therefore, I assure this gathering that the crisis era is gone, and we are determined to cooperate with others to sustain peace in Ekpan. What that means is that we must agree to forgive one another, so that we can collectively present a united front and move forward.

“I advise all inhabitants of Ekpan to accept that this new era is based on promoting justice and peace, economic growth, development, and upholding our core cultural values. It is paramount for us all to be law abiding, maintain decorum, and uphold the highest moral values of our society.

“We must stop any form of rascality and restiveness, including dishonest behaviours. I assure you of my willigness to provide good leadership that will transform Ekpan into an enviable, prosperous, successful and standard modern society. Again, this can only be achieved with your support and cooperation.”
