Niger Assembly holds sitting despite lockdown

Justina Asishana, Minna

Despite the 8 am to 8 pm shut-down order by the Niger state Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, the state House of Assembly was open for plenary.

Although there was thought that there would be hot debates over the timing of the shut-down order, the Legislators did not say a word about the shutdown.

It would be recalled that the Legislators had opposed the 8 am to 8 pm shut-down passing a resolution of 5 pm to 8 am.

The issues deliberated by the Legislators were a committee report and a motion calling the state government to construct five kilometers by-pass road in Kutigi town.

The first day of the lock-down in the state was met with 70 percent compliance as some towns outside the state capital did not obey the stay at home order.

In Suleja, there was no indication of the lock-down as the people went about business as usual while in Beji town in Bosso local government area, the Beji weekly market held.

However, in Minna, there was compliance as few vehicles and motorcycles were seen on the roads while few shops opened for business.

All the main markets were totally shut down but some people found ways of selling some essentials like tomatoes, pepper, onions, and others in front of the locked market.
