IGP cautions policemen

Total Lockdown

Nicholas Kalu, Abuja

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu has cautioned officers and men of the Nigeria Police deployed for the enforcement of the lockdown and social restriction orders, due to COVID-19, to ensure that people’s rights are not infringed on.

He said persons on essential duties exempted from the restriction should be accorded courtesy and access to and fro their places of duty.

Adamu, in a statement yesterday in Abuja by Force spokesman DCP Frank Mba, said: “The IGP notes that the global community is in extraordinary times, with the lockdown taking its toll on every component of our national life.

“Therefore, all police officers deployed for the enforcement of these restriction orders must be professional, humane and tactful and must respect the citizenry. The IGP has directed commissioners of police to monitor police officers on enforcement in their areas of responsibilities.

”The IGP has equally charged Zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) across the nation to ensure supervision of personnel under their watch, as well as compliance with the Standard Operating Procedure guiding this special task. The AIGs and CPs are  to ensure robust anti-crime patrols and surveillance around vulnerable targets such as medical facilities, shops, markets, residential areas, financial institutions and Automated Teller Machines (ATM) points, among others, so that criminals do not take advantage of the COVID-19 challenge to perpetrate crimes.

”The IGP has expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their resilience and compliance with the social restriction order and cooperation with the police at all times. He urges citizens to observe precautionary measures by health authorities to defeat this pandemic.”
