A Non-Governmental Organisation, Zimuzo Development Foundation (ZDF), has donated food items and protective kits to inmates of Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), Anambra State Command.
The items, including 50 cartons of noodles, hand sanitisers, buckets and soaps, were distributed to the Awka, Onitsha and Nnewi Custodial Centres.
Director-General of the foundation Rev. Ukadike Ibeabuchi, who said the gesture was to cushion effects of the lockdown, said the correctional centres were chosen because of inmate’s helplessness as they could not fend for themselves, more so with the sit-at-home order.
He said: “Our Chairman, George Moghalu, said we should distribute these items to ensure there’s enough food in the centres so the inmates don’t die of hunger. We also brought some protective kits to ensure the inmates are properly protected from coronavirus.”
Ibeabuchi added that the generosity would be extended to orphanages and widows.
The Welfare Officer, Okafor Henry, who represented his head, Akabueze Edwin, thanked the foundation for the gesture.
He promised that the items would assuage the pains of inmates.
“We are happy and grateful for this. In fact, it’s coming at a time they are most needed. We pray that God bless and reward you immensely,” he added.
