The Chairman, Oyo State Road Maintenance Agency (OYSROMA, Mr. Kamil Akinlabi, has appealed to the people to desist from burning tyres on the road.
Akinlabi, in a statement in Ibadan yesterday, warned members of vigilance groups to stop the act.
He said the agency noted the fact that it was a trying period for the entire world, but thanked the people for their support and cooperation with Governor Seyi Makinde, in fighting the novel coronavirus.
“However, we note with concerns, the act of burning tyres on our roads, which will destroy the asphaltic layer of the roads, hence weakening the roads and shortening their capacity to last.
“This constitutes additional problems on our roads, as the roads that were recently rehabilitated or reconstructed are spoilt by this act,” he noted.
Akinlabi, who said the government was aware of the hardship faced and sacrifices made by the people, particularly on the security challenges in some areas, which necessitated the burning of tyres, added that the act would only create additional problems for such roads.
He urged the people to desist from burning tyres, and enjoined them to stay safe and continue to be law-abiding, “especially at this challenging period of Covid-19 pandemic.”
