Residents of Mainland and Yaba local government areas went home smiling during the week, as the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Tunji Bello, donated foodstuffs, mainly garri and rice, including cash as palliatives to cushion the effects of the lockdown for the prevention of the spread of coronavirus.
The packages were distributed to all wards in the local government areas, with special emphasis on the needy and the aged. These were also complemented with takeaways.
The beneficiaries heaved a sigh of relief as they expressed profuse gratitude to and fervent prayers for Tunji Bello for his humane consideration in coming to their aid when the pinch of the stay-in order was taking a particularly critical turn on their daily survival.
Also, coming on the heels of Tunji Bello’s gesture were stimulus packages of food donated by Hon Ajani Owolabi, a lawmaker representing the Lagos Mainland local Government Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Commenting on the gesture by Tunji Bello, Chairman of the Association of Lagos State Indigenes, Lagos Mainland branch, Alhaji Ganiyu Salako, described it as an exemplary gesture that challenges the privileged ones who, unlike Hon. Tunji Bello, are only particular about themselves and their families, and do not bother at all for the interest of the masses.
“This is a man who doesn’t believe in half measure in whatever he does. Can you imagine the whole length he had gone by donating not only foodstuffs, but financial gifts as well, including takeaways. Besides, he has also assured us of other packages that will make the coming Ramadan an eventful and enjoyable one. The same thing he does for Christians every Easter and Christmas”, Megida said.
Former Secretary, Justice Forum, Mainland, Hon. Stephen, who lives in Oko Baba, described Tunji Bello as a leader who does not discriminate on grounds of religion. “For instance, in 2015, I was one of those he sent on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. He does this annually, just as he sends Muslims on pilgrimage to Mecca every year in addition to his regular assistance to the needy,” said Stephen.
Administrative Secretary of Mainland Platform, Hon. Oyediji Tunde Oshelu, who commented on Hon Ajani Owolabi, described the lawmaker as a leader who has been able to make an impressive mark on Mainlanders by showing that he cares for them.
“The welfare of the people has been the major task to which he has absolutely devoted himself since his assumption of office. I can tell you with very sense of confidence that we in Mainland are generally impressed with him and his leadership, and for this, we pay great tribute to his highly esteemed father, Hon. Monsuru Owolabi Alao (aka Batola), a veteran politician and former member of the House of Representatives, for giving us such a unique leader,” Oshelu said.
