PROFESSOR Segun Gbadegesin, who worked as one of the main anchors of Radio Kudirat, the propaganda arm of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) during the dark days of the Abacha dictatorship, has enjoined members of the Egbe Omo Yoruba in North America to keep the spirit of Yoruba fallen heroes alive, particularly that of the late Moshood Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Speaking during an interactive session organised by the association to commemorate the 27th anniversary of June 12, 1993 presidential election, the professor, in a solemn manner, called the names of many Yoruba heroes that sacrificed their lives during the struggle for the demand for justice that followed the annulment of the election.

In a statement from its National President Durojaye Akindutire and Secretary Samuel Aderemi, Gbadegesin said it was the injustice perpetrated by the military against the Nigerian people that led to the struggle for the restoration of democracy championed by NADECO.

The columnist and professor of philosophy said the struggle was in response to the injustice from the military-led government and not ethnicity as misrepresented by other ethnic groups.

He added that the Yoruba have always been championing the cause of justice, truth and honesty in every sphere of the socio-cultural framework that is capable of developing Nigeria as a sovereign nation.

June 12, 1993, he noted, represents the vanguard of an idea for the attainment of justice in Yoruba land, and in Nigeria in general.

The interactive session drew participants from members of Egbe Omo Yoruba in North America and Yoruba from other parts of the world, including Nigeria. They converged via Zoom video conferencing to recount the events that led to the struggle against the annulment.
