The Association of Professional women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) has lamented non-use of face masks in Niger state, warning residents are inviting implosion of COVID-19 cases by flaunting precautionary measures.
The association made its observation known while speaking to newsmen after distribution of face masks as part of efforts to mark the 2020 International Women in Engineering Day in Minna.
The chairperson of the Minna Chapter of APWEN, Engineer Arfa Haq, said the effort was to remind residents of the importance to use face masks to prevent spreading the virus.
Speaking about the women engineers, the APWEN chairman of Minna chapter said the field is not for men only,  stating women engineers are also excelling.
She urged female students to take up interest for STEM subjects.
“We want to encourage the girl child to take up interest in engineering. We are working hard to build the interest and help the girl child in this area,” she stated.
The Vice Chairman of Minna Chapter of APWEN, Engineer Muibat Yahaya, lamented residents run the risk of spreading COVID-19 if they continue to ignore precautionary measures.
“It is sad that when we go to our market places and a lot of public places, people no longer wear masks or observe the preventive measures.
“We are using this day to create awareness. We want the people to make wearing of face mask very serious and practice social distancing when you are in the midst of many people,” she stressed
