Bauchi Gov suspends LG officials over farmers/herders clash

Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed has suspended the Caretaker Chairman of Misau Local Government Area of Bauchi State , Yaro Mohammed Gwaram, following a clash between herders and farmers, which claimed nine in Zadawa village.

Others suspended are the deputy chairman and secretary of the council .

Mohammed also set up a 13-man investigative panel to identify the cause of the communal clash.

Nine persons died while others were severely injured in the violent clash between herders and farmers, which occurred on Monday over land used by herders for grazing over the years but was later allocated to farmers by the authorities.

Addressing reporters shortly after an Emergency Security meeting at the Council Chamber, Government House Bauchi,the State capital, on Wednesday the Governor said: ” After we discussed extensively with all the stakeholders on the current happenings in Misau Local Government Area where we had some clashes which resulted in the loss of 9 lives and many injuries, we agreed to look at the situation to avert its reoccurrence.

“Based on the information on our disposal, we have taken measures to to control this very ugly situation.

“We have decided to suspend the Chairman, his deputy and the Secretary pending the outcome of the investigation panel.”

He directed Commissioner of Police ,CP, Lawal Tanko Jimeta, to mobiliSe its mobile unit in Misau alongside personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to provide adequate security in the affected area.

Mohammed also directed the panel set up to look into the crisis to submit its reports within 3 weeks.

He said the timely set up of the panel headed by Air Commodore Tijjani Baba Gamawa is to enable the State Government avert the occurrence of such incident, not only in the area, but across the state in general.

The Governor while condoling the deceased family assured that, anyone found culpable will face the full wrath of the law.
