Shinkafi to EFCC: probe Yari for alleged N900b diversion

From Gbade Ogunwale, Abuja

The governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in the 2019 election in Zamfara State, Alhaji Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, has threatened to sue the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for not investigating immediate past Governor Abdulaziz Yari for allegedly diverting N900 billion.

Shinkafi said he would seek the court’s order to compel the commission to probe Yari for committing the alleged crime during his eight-year tenure.

In a statement on Thursday in Abuja, Shinkafi said the EFCC had refused to act on more than 12 petitions he filed with the commission in the past 12 months.

He said the petitions detailed how the ex-governor and those he called crony companies and individuals diverted the money through “shady deals”.

Shinkafi, in his latest letter, dated July 8, 2020 and addressed to the new Acting EFCC Chairman Mohammed Umar, stressed that despite his numerous petitions to the commission, no action had been taken against the former governor, who he said, had been acting as if he was above the law.

But reacting yesterday, Yari described the allegations as laughable.

In a statement by his media aide, Mayowa Oluwabiyi, the ex-governor said: “We want to ask: how much was the overall allocation that accrued to Zamfara State when Yari held sway as the governor of the state? We still maintain that we will not join issues with Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi.”
