Rivers Police chief faults Wike’s ‘rescue’ of ex-NDDC MD

Rivers Commissioner of Police Joseph Mukan has described the intervention of  Governor Nyesom Wike in an incident between the police and a former acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Joi Nunieh, on Thursday as unfortunate.

Wike, acting on reports armed policemen barricaded the residence of Nunieh, rushed over and took her into protective custody in Government House.

The Governor boasted he rescued Nunieh from abduction, saying authorities were not aware of the mission of the police operatives, who surrounded the residence.

But Mukan, who reportedly spoke in Port Harcourt, faulted Wike’s action saying he should have handed Nunieh over to him as the chief law enforcement officer in the state.

He said: “It is really unfortunate because under normal circumstance if his Excellency is saying that he went to rescue her, under normal circumstsnce, he is supposed to turn her over to me because i am the Commissioner of Police in the state and I will be in a better position to take her than for him to take her to Governmental House.

“Nobody said you should not protect your citizens but everything should be done within the confines of the law.

” I am the Chief law enfoecment officer of the command. So, if you rescue your citizen, we expect you to turn her over to the police who are in a better position to protect her.”
