Journalists have been urged to understand how to input data into their reportage to present factual reports to their readers.
The Dean of the School of information and Communication Technology, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Professor Nicholas Iwokwagh advised participants at a two-day Data Journalism Clinic organised for reporters in Niger State.
The training which was organised by Media Mentors Network in collaboration with the Technology and Development Research Network (TEDREN), Federal University of Technology, Minna, attracted journalists from the online, print and broadcast media along with Information Officers of various ministries in the state.
Iwokwagh who took the participants on the theoretical aspect of Data journalism explained how data journalism has transformed journalism practice stressing that the job of journalists in the emerging new media is to find out what people are trying to hide in numbers and report these to the audience.

The University Don noted that data helps the journalist to identify and report about societal problems stating that great stories are buried in data and cannot be done without the use of data.
A Data and Investigative Journalist with The Nation Newspaper, Justina Asishana delved on the practical aspect of data journalism; explaining the practical aspect of sourcing for data depending on what story they intend to work on.
