The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, has said that the Updated Legislative Agenda of the House of Representatives is a reflection of new realities before the Nigerian people, especially during the current global Coronavirus pandemic.

He was speaking at a one-day retreat for leadership and members of the House of Representatives on the updated legislative agenda and the implementation plan with the theme: ‘Delivering on Our Contract with Nigerians’ in Abuja on Saturday.

According to Gbajabiamila, the objectives of the retreat are to: “provide a platform for the House of Representatives to collectively reflect on the impact of COVID-19 on the economy, the well-being of the people and the role of the House of Representatives in mitigating its impacts on Nigerians.

The Updated Legislative Agenda was presented by the Speaker to the Executive through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, and the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire.

In his speech, Gbajabiamila said the new documents represent the Green Chambers’ intention to be held accountable based on what it has freely committed to achieve, “and which I am confident we will realise, to the glory of God and the edification of our people.”

The updated Legislative Agenda was supported by the Department for International Development (DFID) in Nigeria and the Partnership to Engage, Reform and Learn (PERL).

It spells out ten (10) areas for prioritised legislative interventions, with an implementation framework between 2020 and 2021

These are: Healthcare delivery, education, economy, security, agriculture and food security and sustainable power.

Other sectors are: environmental and climate change, human capital development and social development, governance and House reforms.
