‘It’s uncivilised to force widows on men’

The first lady of Nasarawa State Hajiya Silifat Abdullahi Sule said she would continue to stand and defend the rights of widows in the society.

Hajiya Sule stated this yesterday while distributing palliatives to widows in Nku community of Akwanga Local Government Area of the state.

The First Lady reaffirmed her commitment to fighting all forms of violence against women and warned against forcing widows on marriage against their wish.

She condemned the tradition which allows a man to take over a widow as a wife, which in most cases happen forcefully, noting that it was barbaric and should not be condoned in any community.

“To support the widows of this community, I will donate one million naira for you to engage in petty businesses that will keep you going and provide food for you and your children.”

The First Lady who is also, the Jaruman Nku, while calling on the women to be industrious, urged them to use the money judiciously to enhance their living conditions and address challenges.

The first lady, who marked her 56th birthday, visited the physically challenged and condemned hawking by young girls as it exposes them to social vices such as rape.
