Crisis imminent in Bayelsa community over acting monarch’s abduction

Crisis is brewing in Egbemo-Angalabiri community in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa following abduction of the acting paramount ruler, Chief Ayakurai Gometi, by some armed youths after demanding his resignation.

It was gathered scores of armed youths led by some ex-militants leaders last Saturday stormed the meeting venue of the community leadership and ordered Chief Gometi to resign his position.

The monarch was said to have been whisked away to an unknown destination.

Community sources said the armed youths had vowed to forcefully dethrone the traditional ruler if he failed to tender his letter of resignation.

It was learnt while the chairman of the Community Development Committee was forced to resign the acting paramount ruler was taken hostage and had been kept incommunicado since the crisis began.

Confirming the incident, CDC Chairman, Mr. Paul Tebes, condemned the actions of the youths.

He described their action as despicable, callous, disrespectful and unlawful.

He called on security agencies to intervene and bring the perpetrators to book to avoid a total breakdown of law and order in the area.

Tebes said: “To the best of our knowledge, the chiefs and CDC leadership of the community have committed no offence to warrant such despicable actions of desecration of our traditional leadership

“The conduct of these militant youths is abominable, regrettable and capable of causing a breach of the peace in our community.

“We are therefore calling on the security agencies to intervene promptly before the matter escalates to breakdown of law and order in the community.”
