Katsina approves re-opening of varsities

Katsina State Government on Sunday approved the re-opening of academic activities at Alqalam University and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University Monday.

Special Adviser to Governor Aminu Masari on Higher Education, Bishir Godiya, told The Nation in a telephone chat that only the two tertiary institutions have met the criteria for reopening in the state, including conducting a workshop on COVID-19 protocols as well as meeting other prerequisite conditions for reopening to academic activities.

He said that the two institutions had invited his Department to their mid-week COVID-19 workshops and training for varsity personnel and other preparations, adding that his department was impressed by their level of preparedness for reopening.

“The two institutions have worked hard to update themselves and their personnel on COVID-19 protocols, as well as readying their schools in preparation to resume’’

Al-Qalam University Katsina had earlier announced its resumption for academic activities for today.

Head of Public Affairs Unit, Akilu Atiku, told The Nation that the varsity had also fixed October 26 for the beginning of first semester examinations.

Meanwhile, the authorities of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University, UMYU, has announced its reopening also today, having shown adequate preparations in compliance with NCDC COVID-19 protocols

The Registrar of the University while announcing the reopening through a statement in Katsina, said the University, had earned the approval of the Department of Higher Education and the Katsina State COVID-19 Emergency Response Committee for the re-opening of the university today.
