Residents protest building of gas plant

ONE thousand home owners and residents of Aerodrome GRA, Samonda, Ibadan have cried out to the Oyo State Government over the alleged building of a gas plant on their estate.

They said the plant exposed them to explosion, adding their lives were in danger.

The protesters called for revocation of the approval granted for the building of the gas plant and stoppage of construction at the site, in their interest, that of their neighbours and the public.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, the Vice Chairman of home owners and residents in the GRA, Prof. Omolola Atalabi, said residents were shocked that approval could be given for such construction, considering the health hazards and other environmental dangers of sitting gas plant on the estate, which has over 200 houses.

She said the residents were not against the development of the section of the GRA where the gas plant was sited, but frowned at any commercial venture that posed danger to lives and property.

Atalabi said Proper Environment Impact Assessment (EIA), which was part of the conditions set for the establishment of a gas plant, was not carried out before the purported approval of the gas plant was granted.

She appealed to authorities, including  Oyo State Government Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), to save them from danger.

Another resident, Mr. Yele Martins, said the issue had been on for the past two years, adding that with the calibre of people living on the estate, they would not condone the act.
